WHAT IS A SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER

πŸ–‹️πŸ–‹️πŸ–‹️πŸ–‹️πŸ–‹️πŸ–‹️

Solar Charge Controller in Solar Power SystemA solar charge controller manages the power going into the battery bank from the solar array. It ensures that the deep cycle/lead acid or Lithium batteries are not overcharged during the day, and that the power doesn’t run backwards to the solar panels overnight and drain the batteries. Some charge controllers are available with additional capabilities, like lighting and load control, but managing the power is its primary job.

TYPES:
A solar charge controller is available in two* different technologies,
✓PWM and
✓MPPT. How they perform in a system is very different from each other. An MPPT charge controller is more expensive than a PWM charge controller, and it is often worth it to pay the extra money.

PWM SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER
A PWM solar charge controller stands for “Pulse Width Modulation”. These operate by making a connection directly from the solar array to the battery bank. During bulk charging, when there is a continuous connection from the array to the battery bank, the array output voltage is ‘pulled down’ to the battery voltage. As the battery charges, the voltage of the battery rises, so the voltage output of the solar panel rises as well, using more of the solar power as it charges. As a result, you need to make sure you match the nominal voltage of the solar array with the voltage of the battery bank. *Note that when we refer to a 12V solar panel, that means a panel that is designed to work with a 12V battery. The actual voltage of a 12V solar panel, when connected to a load, is close to 18 Vmp (Volts at maximum power). This is because a higher voltage source is required to charge a battery. If the battery and solar panel both started at the same voltage, the battery would not charge.

A 12V solar panel can charge a 12V battery. A 24V solar panel or solar array (two 12V panels wired in series) is needed for a 24V battery bank, and 48V array is needed for 48V bank. If you try to charge a 12V battery with a 24V solar panel, you will be throwing over half of the panel’s power away. If you try to charge a 24V battery bank with a 12V solar panel, you will be throwing away 100% of the panel’s potential, and may actually drain the battery as well.

PWM Charge Controller Systems

MPPT SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER
An MPPT solar charge controller stands for “Maximum Power Point Tracking”. It will measure the Vmp voltage of the panel, and down-converts the PV voltage to the battery voltage. Because power into the charge controller equals power out of the charge controller, when the voltage is dropped to match the battery bank, the current is raised, so you are using more of the available power from the panel. You can use a higher voltage solar array than battery, like the 60 cell nominal 20V grid-tie solar panels that are more readily available. With a 20V solar panel, you can charge a 12V battery bank, or two in series can charge up to a 24V battery bank, and three in series can charge up to a 48V battery bank. This opens up a whole wide range of solar panels that now can be used for your off-grid solar system.

✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️
THE KEY FEATURES OF A SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER ARE:
Multistage charging of battery bank - changes the amount of power set to the batteries based on its charge level, for healthier batteries.
Reverse current protection - stops the solar panels from draining the batteries at night when there is no power coming from the solar panels.
Low voltage disconnect - turns off attached load when battery is low and turns it back on when the battery is charged back up.
Lighting control - turns attached light on and off based on dusk and dawn. Many controllers are configurable, allowing settings for a few hours or all night, or somewhere in between.
Display- may show voltage of battery bank, state of charge, amps coming in from solar panel.

MICRO BUSINESS: Phone Charging

GVEP manages a programme which supports micro-businesses engaged in servicing the energy needs of poor communities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda – Developing Energy Enterprises Project (DEEP). A significant cluster of businesses registered with the programme are charging mobile phones. Mobile network operators in Africa identify rural customer’s problems with charging phones as a major challenge in expanding their businesses. Recent studies suggest that the need to recharge phones is a significant driver of demand for rural electrification services. The average turnover and rates of growth for the phone charging businesses in DEEP vary across the three countries where the programme operates. GVEP decided to investigate these businesses in more detail in order to better understand the market dynamics and the potential for growth and possibly diversification into sales of solar lanterns and lighting systems. The study also sought to understand the impact that the DEEP programme has had on these businesses. The study built on the initial insights gleaned from a Marketing Challenges study carried out between February and April 2011. This study included a small sample of phone charging businesses.

The follow up study involved interviewing a larger number of these businesses in Uganda and Tanzania. The main findings of the research were:  Phone charging is a highly viable economic activity where the grid is absent or where grid electricity is present but used by few people.  The availability of a local charging service results in greater phone use and increased expenditure on airtime.  Phone users report significant economic and social benefits from use of their phones.  There is considerable unmet need and significant potential for phone charging microbusinesses to grow.  The major constraint on growth is lack of access to funds for the purchase of additional panels and accessories.  These businesses represent a viable, cost efficient and sustainable way of addressing the phone charging needs of off grid subscribers. Supporting the development of such businesses is likely to be more effective than other options currently being considered by mobile network

WHAT IS Fossil fuel

Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons, primarily coal, fuel oil or natural gas, formed from the remains of dead plants and animals.

In common dialogue, the term fossil fuel also includes hydrocarbon-containing natural resources that are not derived from animal or plant sources.

These are sometimes known instead as mineral fuels.

The utilization of fossil fuels has enabled large-scale industrial development and largely supplanted water-driven mills, as well as the combustion of wood or peat for heat.

Fossil fuel is a general term for buried combustible geologic deposits of organic materials, formed from decayed plants and animals that have been converted to crude oil, coal, natural gas, or heavy oils by exposure to heat and pressure in the earth's crust over hundreds of millions of years.

The burning of fossil fuels by humans is the largest source of emissions of carbon dioxide, which is one of the greenhouse gases that allows radiative forcing and contributes to global warming.

A small portion of hydrocarbon-based fuels are biofuels derived from atmospheric carbon dioxide, and thus do not increase the net amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

TYPES OF FOSSIL FUEL

As of 2019, fossil fuels – petroleum, coal and natural gas, with production a fourth type having ceased in 2006 – provided the majority of this energy. Despite the controversies over their impact and the intense effort to develop alternatives to fossil fuels (i.e., "clean" energy, much of it in the form of "renewables"), these fuels changed the world almost overnight and remain indispensable today, however uncomfortably.

How much does fossil fuel energy benefit society?

The benefits to society of fossil fuel energy far outweigh the social costs of carbon by a magnitude of 50 to 500 times, according to a study released by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE).

According to the study, “The Social Costs Of Carbon? No, The Social Benefits Of Carbon,” over the past 250 years global life expectancy has more than doubled and incomes have increased 11-fold in large part due to increased energy production and delivery, most of which has been fossil-based. And although a United States government Federal Interagency Working Group (IWG) estimated the social cost of carbon to be $36/ton; the actual societal benefits of carbon - as a by-product of energy production - is 50 to 500 times greater than the perceived cost.

Moving away from fossil fuels will be costly and slow … but essential, UBS says

Last year saw global energy demand increase at its fastest rate since 2010, according to a research note from analysts at UBS Monday.

The note said that although there was a "growing desire" to transition away from fossil fuels, "demand for most energy resources, including fossil fuels" would continue to rise. It added that while renewable fuel supplies were set to increase at a fast pace, diversification from non-renewable resources would be expensive and time consuming,"Despite growing aspirations to diversify away from fossil fuels, we think demand for most energy resources, including oil, coal, and natural gas, is likely to keep rising over the coming decade," the UBS analysts said in the research.

"We believe supplies of renewable energy will keep rising at an unprecedented pace over the next few decades. But diversification of our current energy resource base away from non-renewable energy resources such as oil, coal, and natural gas on a meaningful scale will be costly and time consuming. We expect the transition to occur only gradually."

However, the research team added that the development of renewable energy was "essential" and a "necessary step in securing our energy future."

The environmental benefits of renewable sources of energy were cited as the "key motivator" for the development of renewables in the near term.

The note said that diversification would be needed to "mitigate the risk of instability in energy availability and pricing." This would be especially pertinent in times of supply or demand shocks in the oil and gas markets, it added.

The renewable energy sector employed 11 million people in 2018, according to a recent report from the International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA). Most renewable energy jobs were in the solar photovoltaic industry, which employed 3.6 million people, according to IRENA.

AFRICA WHICH HAS NOT FULL USED THE FOSSILE FUEL OPTION WELL WILL ALSO BE SLOW TO SWITCH, NOT WITHSTANSING PROGRESS IS BEING MADE IN THE USE OF SOLAR IN AFRICA

ENTREPRENEURS MUST TAKE THIS FACTORS INTO SERIOUS CONSIDERATION.

20 fascinating renewable energy facts Generally

In the fight against the climate crisis, renewable energy takes centre stage.

It has the power to tackle problems so many of us are worried about, like global warming, air pollution in our towns and cities, and acidity in our oceans.

Thankfully, green energy is increasingly more popular and affordable around the world. Of course, renewable energy has been around for some time; the Persians fashioned windmills way back in 200 BC

These 20 facts reveal the history behind renewables – and highlight its growth, efficiency, and effectiveness as we look to the future.

  1. Just 1 wind turbine can generate enough electricity to power 1,400 homes.

  1. Incredibly, as of 2017, China builds 2 wind turbines every hour!

  1. Renewable energy sources, like wind and solar power, generated over a third of the UK’s electricity in 2019.

  1. In 2019, 45% of energy subsidies given out by the EU went to renewable energy sources. But carbon-heavy fossil fuels still got 33%.

  1. Renewable Energy creates 5 times more jobs than fossil fuels.

  1. Siemens built the first ever commercial offshore wind turbine 30 years ago. Its blades were 5 metres long, producing just 30 kilowatts of power. The latest model has 75 metre blades, producing 6 megawatts (25,000 times as much) – enough to power 6,000 homes.

  1. Solar power isn’t just a daytime deal – power from the sun’s rays can be stored in salt and used at night too. A power plant in Spain soaks up sun by day and pumps out 7 hours of power to the surrounding area by night.

  1. In 2016, California’s renewable energy firm SolarReserve commissioned the world’s first 24/7 solar power plant in the Nevada Desert, powering 75,000 homes for 3 hours a day.

  1. In 2016, Portugal made history by running on renewable energy alone for 107 hours.

  1. If taken full advantage of, the sunlight beamed on the earth for 1 hour could meet world’s energy demands for an entire year!

  1. Solar power may account for the world's main source of power by 2050.

  1. And Europe and North/West and central Africa could run on 100% renewable energy by 2050.(Solar Energy)

  1. 25% of the UK's population live in areas suitable for Geothermal District Heating using heat pumps.

  1. Romans were the very first to use geothermal energy to heat their homes, with warm air moving under floors and inside walls.

  1. A world record was set in 1990 when a solar-powered airplane flew across the United States in stages, using no fuel at all.

  1. Tech giants, Google, Apple, and Facebook lead the pack in creating a ‘green internet’ – each are using increasingly green energy to power the web.

  1. In 1921 Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the photoelectric effect – which led to the invention of solar panels! Photovoltic cells.

  1. Megabucks: the renewable energy industry is growing fast. By 2025, the global market is expected to to be worth  $1,512.3.6 bn!  #4 Trillion Naira

  2. The Itaipu Dam in Paraguay provides 76% of the country’s electricity and 17% of the electricity consumed in Brazil (displacing 67.5 million tonnes of CO2 every year). In Iceland, 100% of energy is supplied by geothermal and hydropower sources!

  3. According to the WWF, the whole world could get all the power it needs from renewable resources by 2050, ending our reliance on fossil fuels and other depleting resources – but only if the right political, financial and societal decisions are made, and fast.

USING THE 7 MOUNTAIN TO PRAY FOR NIGERIA

If you’re looking for a strategic and effective way to pray for the United States, there are seven areas that need your faith and prayers. Find out how to pray for the seven mountains of influence in America!

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” –2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)

America is a powerful nation—one that influences other nations around the world, right down to their ability to freely receive and hear the gospel. As citizens of this great nation, and believers in Jesus Christ, we are called by God to humble ourselves and pray for righteousness in our culture. If we, as God’s people, seek His face and His right way of doing things, He promises to heal our land.

The enemy has attacked our nation and culture from every direction, making it difficult to know where to even start. A simple way of approaching it is this— there are seven distinct cultural areas, or “mountains,” that shape and influence our culture and nation. Those people at the top of each mountain are the gatekeepers of that particular influence. The more righteous people at the top of each mountain, the more righteousness will reign in our country.

According to Deuteronomy 28:13, we are to be “the head and not the tail.” We, as Christians, are to be reigning in life, which includes these seven areas—not to lord over others, but to love and serve them through righteousness. Founding Father Benjamin Rush said, “Nothing can be politically right that is morally wrong.” There’s a lot morally wrong in these seven mountains of influence, and that’s why we, the Christians, are needed in this hour.

When you pray for the seven mountains of influence and godly leaders to rise up within each cultural sphere, you are attacking the enemy’s plan in that particular realm and taking back the dominion that rightfully belongs to us, as Christians. As David Barton said, we must “move that seven-mountain philosophy forward [and] take God’s principles into all aspects of life.”[1]

To be most effective when you pray for the seven mountains of influence, you can target specific areas where change is needed the most. Below are the seven mountains of influence in America and prayer targets, so you can pray with boldness and faith.

1. Government

First Timothy 2:1-3 says that we are to pray, intercede and give thanks for kings and all people in authority. This is God’s command to every believer today. This means we are to pray for all people in authority, whether we agree with them or not. You can pray that all leaders will make righteous and godly decisions. Praying for leaders, even when we don’t think they are doing the right things, is productive toward God’s plan and purpose for our nation. Proverbs 21:1 says the heart of a king is in the hand of the Lord. He can turn it however He wants, so your prayers are important.

While praying for those who are already in authority, we must also pray for more godly men and women to rise up and take their place in positions within government across our nation. “When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice” (Proverbs 29:2). Pray that those Christians God has chosen will heed the call and run for office. Pray that they will be elected even against strong opposition.

Finally, pray that the Spirit of the Lord and His wisdom will be upon all the following:

  • Federal Government: Executive, legislative and judicial branches
  • State Government: Executive, legislative and judicial branches
  • Local Government: Executive, legislative and judicial branches, as well as police and first responders
  • Military: Pray for leaders, divine protection for our troops, and courage and dependence on God.
